Jensen Ackles mourns the final death of Supernatural spinoff The Winchesters

Supernatural ran for 15 seasons, first on The WB and then on The CW. The Winchesters was a prequel series about the parents of Sam and Dean Winchester, the monster-hunting brothers at the heart of the original series. The CW canceled The Winchesters after one season, as the network tightened its belt. Jensen Ackles, who played Dean on the original series and produced the new one, tried to get another network to save it. But now, we learn that it’s dead, officially.

Deadline reports that all three networks which might have been interested in reviving The Winchesters — Max, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video — have all passed, leaving the show dead in the water. Still, 16 seasons across two shows isn’t a bad record.

Ackles weighed in on Twitter, chalking the failure of the campaign up to bad timing:

To all of you who watched, followed, and supported this story, THANK YOU. And to all those who brought this show to life…I couldn’t be more proud of what we all did together. But as they say…timing is everything. With a massive Network shift coupled with an industry strike…welp…that’s some unfortunate timing. Sleep well dear @WinchestersOnCW…until we meet again. Somewhere down the road.

Jensen Ackles leaves open the possibility of returning to Supernatural in the future
Ackles makes it sound like there could be a Supernatural revival of some kind in the future, which is always possible; shows and movies are always getting revived and remade nowadays.

But for now, this is the end. And if you’re having trouble adjusting, there is still one Winchester brother running around on The CW: Walker, which stars Jared “Sam Winchester” Padalecki, was one of the few CW shows to avoid the axe.
