As a result, The CW decided not to pick up the spin-off, and the issue of the monster problem in Chicago was never addressed in the original show. This was not the first time Supernatural had faced challenges with spin-offs, as another potential spin-off called Wayward Sisters was also canceled. There were discussions for years about expanding the Supernatural universe. The show had previously featured the Ghostfacers in a single-season web series and released Supernatural: The Anime Series. By its ninth season, The CW was eager for more Supernatural content, especially after the success of The Vampire Diaries spin-off, The Originals. This led to the premiere of “Bloodlines” as a backdoor pilot at the end of Season 9, setting the stage for a larger story. “Bloodlines” takes place in Chicago and follows Ennis Ross, a young aspiring cop who witnesses his almost-fiancée being killed by a monster. Ennis is then introduced to the underground world of monsters. He teams up with David Lassiter, a shapeshifter seeking revenge for his brother’s death. Eventually, the duo meets Sam and Dean Winchester, who inform them about the existence of monsters in Chicago. They discover that the city is controlled by five monster “Mafia” families, including vampires, werewolves, and Djinn. Together, they try to save a young werewolf named Violet Duval who has been kidnapped.

They discover that the city is controlled by five monster “Mafia” families, including vampires, werewolves, and Djinn. Together, they try to save a young werewolf named Violet Duval who has been kidnapped. One interesting aspect of “Bloodlines” is the partnership between Ennis and David, a human and a monster working together. Their relationship develops as the spin-off was intended to explore their friendship. Ennis lost his father and girlfriend, and David desires to live a normal life outside of his monster family, creating a connection between them. Despite the initial excitement for Supernatural: Bloodlines, the backdoor pilot did not resonate with fans. Its low ratings and negative reception may have been due to the limited presence of Sam and Dean, as well as the show’s departure from the original Supernatural formula. These factors, along with its similarity to The Originals, led to the spin-off’s cancellation. Unfortunately, the cancellation left a major plot hole in the Supernatural universe. Sam and Dean promise to send help to Ennis to deal with the monster problem in Chicago, but this issue is never addressed again. The lack of closure in this storyline and the missed opportunities to explore it further are significant oversights in the original series. Supernatural has had difficulties with spin-offs overall. Wayward Sisters, another potential spin-off, was also canceled despite fan support. Although Supernatural ultimately did get a spin-off in the form of a prequel, its attempts at expanding the universe beyond Sam and Dean were largely unsuccessful. The reasons for this remain unclear, but it is evident that Supernatural’s spin-off ventures faced challenges in finding the right balance between maintaining the original tone and creating something new and engaging for fans.
